A 4 night break staying in Mawnan Smith, nr Falmouth at the Trelawne Hotel
The hotel was down a quiet country lane.
DAY ONE
On our way down, we stopped off for tea at
Knights Hayes Court a beautiful National Trust Property. Left my camera in the car, as would be taking plenty of photos this week!
By mid afternoon we arrived at
The Lost Gardens of Heligan. My own taste in gardens is not really jungly planting, but I appreciated the textures of the plants and the simplicity of the odd dash of purple primula and foxgloves amongst all the shades of green.
| The Mud Lady |
| Open views from the top end of the gardens |
Loved her hat. Lost in the jungle gardens.
The highlight was the field of red poppies with the open views beyond.....
| A happy photographer who can't resist a red poppy! |
DAY TWO
A walk before breakfast in the soft light to our local beach area . Entrance through this gate.
| This little bird loved to sit on the thorny twigs. Stonechat I believe. |
| The soft light on the water at around 8am. |
We had been recommended to visit 2 Coves in particular, Kynance Cove and Mullion Cove. both very pretty, but Kynance with amazing views in all directions.
| Following the path down from the car park at Kynance Cove.... |
| Looking to the left |
| Looking to the right. The cafe down at beach level. |
| Loads of these wild purple Geraniums |
| We climbed and walked for an hour, and she was still here in the same place when we came back. |
| High tide was just receeding, so we were able to get through at beach level. |
| When tide is fully in, there is no route through at beach level. |
| After his ice cream. |
| We climbed to the other side beyond the cafe, and still great views all around. |
In the afternoon, we went to another Cove,
Mullion Cove just a few miles from here. The mid day sun was harsh by this time, but we were checking it out for a possible sunset location for after dinner at
The Halzephron Inn.
The following taken 8pm - 10pm......
| 30 second exposure with 1.5 people on the harbour wall, and blurred boats. always a problem! |
| We climbed high above the village for the sunset |
DAY THREE
In the morning we went to Mousehole, pronounced Mauzil. What a ridiculous spelling! The sat nav brought us in via the narrowest of narrow lanes, and eventually twice round the narrow village streets tying to park. Not a pleasant experience. But we then found a car park just outside the village which was easy to park. The weather was rubbish for photographs with a really blurgh sky.
Then onto St Michael's Mount, just a short drive along the coast. The tide was in, so a boat trip out, and walked the Causeway back. The sun came out and it was time for ice cream!
| He was a great character to photograph! |
| Blue skies! What a difference it makes |
| these are Aoniums. They were unusually large. Obviously very happy. |
| The start of yet another climb. |
It's a steep climb to the mount, but worth it for the views from the top, where the first walkers were heading
back on the causeway. |
| Causeway fully exposed by the time we cam back. And now no boats until the tide is back in. |
DAY FOUR
Last full day and still SO much to see. We decided to go into Falmouth and take a boat trip to St Mawes on the Roseland Peninsula.
| OK, so that's not our boat! |
| We walked (climbed) out of town towards the castle. Everywhere we go is uphill!! |
| In the far distance a J-class yacht race. Apparently only 6 left and 5 of them at this race from Falmouth. |
| This pink plant is Centranthus Rubra (Valerian). It is all over Cornwall. |
After our trip back to Falmouth, we decided we had time to go to Mevagissey. After a quick look around the harbour area, we spotted a sign "Cream teas just 10 mins walk". Guess what ... UPHILL. Here we go again. But great views over the harbour from the top.
| Centranthus Rubra again at Megavissy |
DAY FIVE
Our final visit was to Looe on the way home. It was not the best weather infact it rained. Qaint little streets, although a bit kiss me quick style of shops.
| Crab fishing in her 30's style clothes and hairdo. |
| Grey, and more grey. Needs some blue sky. |
| Artist at work even in the rain. |
A wonderful 5 days for my first trip to South Cornwall. Plenty of things to see , so no doubt we will return again to do more exploring.
